Why Experts Disagree
When two specialists who have read the same research reach opposite conclusions, the public often concludes that nobody knows anything. That reaction is understandable, but it usually misreads what is happening.
Experts rarely disagree about the raw evidence. They disagree about which risks matter more, how much weight to give a weak signal, and what to do when the data are incomplete.
These are questions about values and priorities, not only about facts. Two economists can accept the same figures and still prefer different policies because they care about different groups.
There is also an honest professional caution that outsiders read as evasion. A researcher who says the evidence is mixed is usually being accurate rather than useless.
The sensible response is to ask what the disagreement is really about. Often the argument is not over truth, but over what we should be willing to accept as the price of acting.
