The Right to Repair
When a phone or a washing machine breaks, the cheapest and quickest response is often to replace it. Manufacturers rarely publish the spare parts or the repair instructions that would make a repair possible.
This pattern costs households real money and produces enormous amounts of electronic waste. A device that could easily last ten years is thrown away after three.
Several governments have begun to require manufacturers to provide spare parts and repair manuals. The rules are new, but the underlying idea is old: buyers should be able to keep what they own working.
Repair also has a social side that is easy to overlook. In repair cafes, strangers sit together, share their tools, and learn that a broken object is not yet rubbish.
