The Case for Handwriting

Typing is faster, fully searchable, and far easier to share with others. On almost every practical measure, the keyboard has clearly won and the pen has lost.

打字更快、可检索，也远比手写容易分享。在几乎所有实用的标准上，键盘都赢了，笔都输了。

Yet handwriting keeps appearing in careful studies of learning, and usually for the same reason. Writing by hand is slow, and that very slowness forces the writer to choose.

可是在学习类研究里，手写总是一次次出现，而且原因往往相同。手写很慢，而这份慢逼着写的人做取舍。

A person taking notes by hand cannot possibly record everything, so they must decide what matters. That decision, rather than the physical act of writing, is probably what improves later recall.

手写记笔记的人不可能把全部内容都记下来，所以他必须判断什么才是重点。真正让日后回想能力提高的，很可能正是这个「判断」，而不是写字这个动作本身。

None of this argues that students should abandon their laptops or stop typing. It suggests that the choice of tool quietly shapes what we pay attention to while we are using it.

这并不主张学生该放弃笔记本电脑。它只是提示：选择什么工具，会悄悄决定我们使用它时在注意什么。

The pen survives not out of nostalgia, but because it imposes a genuinely useful constraint. Sometimes a limitation is the whole point, and the slower path is the one that teaches.

笔能留下来不是因为怀旧，而是因为它强加了一个有用的限制。有时候，限制本身就是它的好处，而那条更慢的路，才是真正教会你的路。
