Attention as a Scarce Resource
For most of industrial history the binding constraint on media was distribution. There were only so many printing presses, channels and hours in the day.
Digital networks removed that constraint almost entirely, and something else became scarce. The bottleneck is no longer the supply of content but the human capacity to attend to it.
Business models adapted accordingly. When attention is the scarce good, the objective shifts from satisfying users to retaining them. Content is then optimised not for value but for frictionless continuation.
Recognising this asymmetry is the beginning of resistance. Anyone who understands that their attention is being harvested can begin to spend it deliberately.
The consequences reach well beyond wasted hours. Attention is the raw material of learning, of friendship and of careful judgement; a mind trained to switch every twenty seconds becomes worse at all three.
Some remedies are personal — turning off notifications, leaving the phone in another room, deciding in advance what a session is for. Others are collective and far harder: building products that are judged by whether users are better off, not merely by how long they stay.
